What: The KEBS medium-term strategy 2010-2013 included a review of the framework to clarify and rationalize conflicting and overlapping responsibilities as well as align Kenya’s SQMT infrastructure with international and regional provisions. The project provides support towards reforming the national SQMT policy and legislation in conformity with an EAC wide framework. RBS institutional capacity strengthened

The bureau is also charged with the responsibility to build capacity in testing laboratories to support industries and ensure Rwanda goods comply with national and regional standards. TMA will provide support to RBS in order to carry out this mandate. What: TMA’s assistance on standards compliance specifically addresses the wider elements of a national quality Infrastructure which includes conformity assessment through testing and accreditation. How: TMA will provide technical assistance to RBS to support development of legal and regulatory framework and training RBS and non RBS quality officials. Tanzania NTB National Monitoring Committee

The existing NTBs have also created a mechanism which funds government institutions and a culture which also includes the possibility of corruption. In Tanzania, foreign-registered cargo trucks are required to pay US$ 500 to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) on each entry, in addition to annual fees of $600. This makes eliminating NTBs one of the highest priorities for the EAC Secretariat and member states. What: Elimination of NTBs.
