Low levels of understanding of import and export procedures by traders and border staff results in delays. Delays increase transportation costs for traders. What: A one stop border post is being constructed at Kobero/Kabanga border points. How: TMA is providing funding for the construction of the OSBP and is supporting the lead agencies to implement the project on time and ensure quality. The border is extremely slow, and Nimule takes an average of four days to process imports. This delay imposes serious costs on traders. These time delays can be attributed to inadequate border infrastructure, insufficient quality and quantity of technical equipment, poor border design, complicated procedures based on centralized control, and multiple border organisations working in isolation. What: TradeMark Africa is financing an OSBP at Elegu, Uganda, and modernising and extending the facilities at Nimule, South Sudan. How: TMA will provide full funding for the construction of the OSBP. Harmonisation of customs procedures will be undertaken by a Joint Task Force of Experts from the two countries concerned and supported by TradeMark Africa. The project will be implemented in coordination with other ongoing initiatives of the World Bank, JICA, USAID, the African Development Bank and the European Union. TMA will engage consultants for design and supervise work. This unpaved section of 37 Km of Northern Corridor road network was a major constraint to the better operationalisation of a one stop border post at Kagitumba and Mirama Hills is expected to decrease the time for goods to be transported between Kampala and Kigali and increase the volume of traffic using this route. What: The project focuses on upgrading and paving of the road to bitumen standards from Ntungamo to Mirama Hills Border (approx 37 Km long). The works consist of upgrading the road from gravel to Class II Bitumen Standard, with 7m-wide carriageway of asphalt concrete surfacing and 2No. 1.5m-wide double surface dressed shoulders. How: TMA is providing financial assistance to the Government of Uganda (GoU) to assist in the financing of the project. The Works will be executed by a Construction firm and Quality Assurance will be ensured through permanent supervision of works backed up by Project Managers from UNRA and TMA. Both the Project Managers and Consultancy supervision firm will report to the UNRA/TMA joint established Technical Oversight Committee (TOC), which will approve all project implementation decisions. [vc_row][vc_column][single_project_block_1 heading="Kenya Country Programme"]Since its inception in 2011, the TMA Kenya Country Programme has been assisting the Government of Kenya and the private sector to implement interventions to boost trade within itself, with its neighbours, and with the rest of the world, and to facilitate effective participation and leadership of the country in driving the EAC integration agenda. The programme supported 28 projects worth about $90 million from inception to June 2017. The interventions cut across the three TMA strategic objectives and aim to contribute to TMA’s overall impact targets by end of TMA’s Phase I programming.[/single_project_block_1][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type="fixGreySection"][vc_column][blank_color_section][/vc_column][/vc_row]

TMA commissioned a feasibility study for the programme in 2017 which assessed the project as being both economically and financially viable. Water transport in Rwanda is currently unexploited and TMA support will help the Government to attract investment into this mode of transport which has been found to be both cheaper and safer than road transport. TMA is supporting the Government of Rwanda (GoR) to construct harbour facilities in four districts, Rubavu, Rusizi, Karongi and Rutsiro (Nkora) and attract private sector investors to operate the ports and ferry services on the lake. The choice of these locations is based on TMA commissioned feasibility study of 2017 which includes a comprehensive traffic survey and analysis of project benefits where transport benefits are expected to reach and $ 20.4 million as annual savings and $ 17.7 million as a result of avoided fatalities. Increased lake connectivity will increase economic gains from Cross Border Trade by offering better opportunities for traders to select the crossings where they get better prices. Key commodities traded include cement which moves from the will move from South to North, while potatoes and dairy products will move from North to South. Cross...

Dar es Salaam port throughput has increased from 7.4 million tons in 2007 to 14.26 million tons in 2014. The target for 2015/16 has been set at 18 million tons (BRN). Dar port is also an important transit point for many African nations granting access to maritime travel and trade through the Indian Ocean. The country is poised to achieve between 7 and 8% GDP growth over the next few years. In 2012, fourteen (14) percent of the imports and exports of Tanzania’s landlocked neighbouring countries experiencing a GDP growth averaging 7% passed through the Dar Port. This is expected to grow further as the region undergoes economic expansion. To take advantage of the above, a critical element for the economic performance of the country is a cost effective and efficient logistics framework that addresses the full spectrum of freight logistics challenges. What: The project’s Key outputs include; Capacity building plan of BRN Transport KNRA key implementers developed and implemented Policy briefs highlighting issues affecting logistics sector developed Freight logistics platform operationalised Comprehensive advocacy and communication plan for engaging policymakers and logistics players developed and implemented Database of logistics players operational Strategy on logistics developed National conference on logistics held How: TMA will support TPSF and the sector through...
