That study, now complete, assessed the impact of port operations on factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, air, water and soil quality, noise and sound by vessels, smoke emitted by ships, waste management, oil spill, marine pollution, energy consumption and utilization, natural resources, wildlife and marine conservation as well as impact on local communities. The output of this exercise informed KPA and other stakeholders in developing a Green Port Policy and an associated implementation plan to support the transformation of the port into a modern and competitive regional hub. The action plan implemented, will reduce operating costs to Kenya Ports Authority and port users, improve labor productivity, minimize accidents, improve health and safety of the workforce, and enhance environmental quality for the port and its surroundings.[/single_project_block_1][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id="desired-result"][vc_column][single_project_block_2 heading="Desired Results" image_1="42672" image_2="42670"]Kenya Ports Authority increases capacity and improves efficiency in handling of cargo and ships for bulk shipping & transport sector.[/single_project_block_2][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id="project-insight"][vc_column][project_single_ele_3_container heading="More Project Insights." sub_heading="Projects Highlights From A Glance" slide_1="info access for 20 crops & over five breeds of livestock" slide_2="info access for 20 crops & over five breeds of livestock" slide_3="info access for 20 crops & over five breeds of livestock"][single_project_content] Development of Resilient...

[vc_row][vc_column][custom_inner_menus select_menu="project"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][single_project_block_1 heading="Mombasa port infrastructure works" implementor="Kenya Ports Authority (KPA)" target_group="Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya National Highways Authority, Kenya Urban Roads Authority, PSOs and CSOs, Importers and Exporters, Freight forwarders" project_value="US$ 45,509,504.19" implementation_period="2013 - 2018" download_btn_text="Download Project PDF" download_btn_link="#url"]The Port of Mombasa has over the years recorded significant growth in traffic volumes. This high growth has put a strain on existing port infrastructure, necessitating costly investments to improve operations and service delivery. Despite the efforts by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to expand capacity and improve efficiency in cargo handling, the port still faces capacity constraints and service delivery challenges. These include low labour productivity, poor cargo off take by rail and road, cargo clearance delays, lack of full automation, operational wastages and poor resource utilization. These are compounded by changing ship technology; poor urban planning around the port; a changing legal and policy environment; corruption occurring along the Northern Corridor. What: TMA and KPA have agreed on a programme of activities to provide KPA with additional capacity to handle increasing demand which include: Legal and Regulatory Revision; Port-wide Productivity Improvement; Infrastructure and Facilities Improvement; Preliminary analysis of the Mombasa Dry Port Initiative; Supporting KPA’s communications with all key stakeholders, decision-makers and communities; Mitigation and adaptation to climate impacts at the Port. Efficient implementation of national and regional NTB mechanisms How: TMA’s support to KPA is delivered through financial aid and technical support. Dar es Salaam port infrastructure works

[vc_row][vc_column][custom_inner_menus select_menu="project"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][single_project_block_1 heading="Dar es Salaam port infrastructure works" implementor="Tanzania Port Authority (TPA)" target_group="Importers and Exporters" project_value="US$ 19,300,000" implementation_period="2013 - 2019" download_btn_text="Download Project PDF" download_btn_link="https://www.trademarkafrica.com/download/61017/"]Transport demand across the Dar es Salaam Port has been growing strongly, leading to congestion and delay at the Port. Studies have shown that the Dar es Salaam Port layouts, off-take processes, stacking arrangements and marine services are in drastic need of modernization. They must suit the needs of modern container, dry and liquid bulk handling requirements and technologies and the sharp growth in traffic and daily freight tasks. The land immediately surrounding Dar Port is also characterised by poor and inadequate infrastructure, uncoordinated development and a mushrooming of poorly regulated activities. What: The project focuses on supporting TPA to become an efficient trade gateway through public and increased private sector investment. Key outputs include; Support to TPA to undertake transformation towards a more business-oriented organisation and gradually towards a full and efficient landlord; Improved port productivity by strengthening operational procedures, cost accounting and tariff system and capacity building of staff; Support towards the Improvement in Spatial Efficiency at Dar es Salaam Port to ensure better use of space at the yards and improve roads and gates system to facilitate smooth flow of traffic; Support in completing preparatory studies to enable major Infrastructural Development activities for capacity expansion and the Dar Port Channel Improvement. How: TMAs support to Tanzania Port Authority is delivered through financial aid and technical support. Contact: Lilian Masalu, Email: lilian.masalu@trademarkea.com Click here to...

Lake Kivu Transport

The TMA commissioned a feasibility study for the programme in 2017 which assessed the project as being both economically and financially viable. Water transport in Rwanda is currently unexploited and TMA support will help the Government to attract investment into this mode of transport which has been found to be both cheaper and safer than road transport. TMA will support the Government of Rwanda to construct basic harbour facilities in two port towns of Rubavu and Rusizi and attract private sector investors to operate ferry services on the lake while the Government of Rwanda will secure funds internally to fund the development of Karongi and Nkora ports. The choice of these locations is based on TMA commissioned a feasibility study of 2017 which includes a comprehensive traffic survey and analysis of project benefits where transport benefits are expected to reach and $ 20.4 million as annual savings and 17.7 as a result of avoided fatalities. Increased lake connectivity will increase economic gains from Cross Border Trade by offering better opportunities for traders to select the crossings where they get better prices. Key commodities traded include cement which moves from the will move from South to North, while potatoes and dairy products will move from...

Kalundu Port Infrastructure Upgrade

The Port is threatened by sedimentation at the port entrance. The sand bank has raised to the point where vessels accessing the port run a high risk of grounding. This also means that larger ships cannot access the port. The removal of the sand bank through dredging at the port is therefore necessary for its continued ability to service larger vessels.
