Kenya and Japan next week will sign an agreement to begin construction of the Sh24 billion Mombasa Southern Bypass.
It is part of the Mombasa Port Area Road Development project initiated by the government and Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The project includes construction of a container terminal and provision of cargo-handling equipment at the port. This will make it the largest commercial port in East Africa.
Most of the cargoes handled at this port are imported goods such as fuel, iron and steel products, fertiliser, food, and used cars from Japan and other countries.
Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kentaro Sonoura paid a courtesy call to Transport CS James Macharia on Tuesday.
He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to support Kenya’s infrastructure projects.
