KEBS RECEIVES EQUIPMENT WORTH KSHS. 63M TO BOOST QUALITY CONTROL

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has received advanced testing equipment from TradeMark Africa (TMA) to support implementation of a comprehensive standardization framework.

The equipment valued at Kshs. 63m consists of: a mass spectrometer, auto sampler, gas chromatograph, control software and assorted spares that will place KEBS at a strategic position to support local and regional initiatives to conduct quality assessment of goods so as to guarantee quality and safety.

“The use of the new technology will ensure our local products become competitive in both regional and international markets”, said Managing Director, KEBS Ms. Eva Oduor during the handover ceremony.

The partnership will also benefit some EAC Partner states that are yet to implement state-of-the-art technologies for testing of samples within their borders.

TradeMark Africa Kenya Country Director Dr. Chris Kiptoo noted that they are keen to support the implementation of a comprehensive framework for regional integration through various partnerships.

He added that TradeMark Africa (TMA) is will work closely with Kenyan agencies that support trade facilitation.

“We will continue to focus our efforts in building the capacity of the private sector and government agencies in East Africa. For prosperity to grow in the region, trade must increase. This initiative will contribute to trade increase”, reiterated Dr. Kiptoo.

The new partnership with KEBS will ensure a favourable standardization regulatory framework in Kenya, build the capacity for Standards Quality Management, Metrology and testing activities as well as ensure effective trade facilitation for Kenyan products in the regional market.

Other initiatives at the KEBS receiving support of TradeMark Africa (TMA) include development of a National Quality Policy and revision of the Standards Act. Both are integral in the development of regional trade.
