Demolition of sheds no. 2 and 3 at Dar Port was officially launched by Minister of Transport Hon. Samuel Sitta in presence of TPA’s Ag. Director General Mr. Awadhi Massawe. The event was attended by Development Partners including TradeMark Africa, UK Department for International Development (DFID) and World Bank who jointly support Tanzania’s Big Results Now initiative (BRN) through financing the Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Project (DMGP) aimed at modernising the port by improving its physical infrastructure capacity and operational efficiency.

The DMGP project is being implemented in two phase. Phase 1 under TMA support focuses on enhancing port’s spatial efficiency through demolition and relocation of sheds 2 to 7, upgrading of roads and gates to introduce a single way traffic flow system at the port, improving productivity and operational processes, and carrying our preparatory surveys and studies for phase 2. The second phase, which will be funded by World and DFID, will concentrate on dredging of the channel and basin, strengthening and moderning berths 1-7 and construction of roll on roll off (RoRO) terminal. The dredging and berths strengthening and modernisation will allow the handling of bigger vessels to improve port’s competitiveness in the global maritime industry.
Phase 1 is expected to increase Dar port’s throughput to 18 million tonnes by 2016/2017 from 12.1 million in 2012/2013. Phase 2 will further increase throughput capacity to 28 million tonnes. This event marks a very important beginning of major transformation of Dar es Salaam port to an efficient international trade gateway. These drastic changes in port’s efficiency and throughput guarantee an increase of revenue and other economic benefits for TPA and Tanzania.
